I was recently given a new responsibility that I don't have the skills for. How do I turn it down in an email but at the same time keep my job?

Question was originally answered on

If your manager has given you a new responsibility, they have an obligation to provide you with the training so that you are able to complete the new duties.

It is likely in their best interest that you are successful in carrying them out.

I would suggest that you arrange a live, face-to-face meeting with your manager to share your concerns. Forget the e-mail idea. This isn’t the type of message that should be sent electronically.

I would suggest that you prepare yourself for meeting your manager by creating a list of concerns or areas that you feel you are lacking skills in. It would also be worth your while to research some courses or educational programs that would help you gain the skills.

The advantage to providing solutions is that you will appear to be proactive rather than reactive.

Depending on what industry you work in, now is not the time to be showing your weaknesses. We all should be displaying and promoting our value to our employers.
