Can you use your LinkedIn profile as a resume?

It might be helpful to think of your LinkedIn profile as an adjunct to your professionally written resume.

Whereas your resume needs to be terse and succinct, it also needs to be crafted for a specific job you are applying for.

Your LinkedIn profile allows you to expand upon different categories, an example being work experience. You could outline the skills you developed, and experience gained while working in a specific position.

When an employer or a hiring manager is reviewing your resume, odds are they will also check you out on LinkedIn.

Your LinkedIn profile provides the opportunity to feature additional skills and experience you may have that may not be evident in your resume and may be of interest to the employer.

Once upon a time LinkedIn was basically your resume on steroids. Nowadays, it needs to be more focused and promote you as a solution to a problem that the employer is trying to resolve.

If you are still developing your LinkedIn profile, I would suggest searching for other people with similar qualifications to see how they’ve completed their profile.

With starting resumes with Career Objectives being out of fashion and replaced with positioning statements, it would be a good idea for your resume positioning statement to be similar if not identical as the opening statement on your LinkedIn profile.

Thanks for an interesting question.
